About the role

The Amazon Search team builds customer-focused search solutions to make shopping effortless globally. As an Applied Scientist II, you lead efforts in query understanding, semantic matching, and ranking using NLP and ML. This full-time role is based in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

What you’ll do

• Develop and deploy ML models to produce relevant search results
• Design and train semantic matching models for ranking and relevance
• Develop reinforcement learning and reward-modeling approaches to improve search quality
• Train multi-objective ranking systems balancing diversity, specificity, and relevance
• Design scalable model architectures optimized for strict latency constraints
• Lead end-to-end science projects from problem formulation through production launch

What you’ll bring

• 3+ years building machine learning models for business applications
• PhD or Master's degree
• Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed venues
• Proficiency in Java, C++, Python, or related languages
• Background in algorithms, data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel/distributed computing, or high-performance computing

Nice to have

• Experience using Unix/Linux
• Experience in professional software development
