About the role

Nature Materials, part of Springer Nature's Nature Portfolio, is seeking an Associate or Senior Editor to join its editorial team in Shanghai, Beijing, Milan, or Pune under a hybrid working model. The role involves handling original research papers, overseeing peer review, making editorial decisions, commissioning and editing content such as Reviews and Perspectives, and liaising with editors and scientists worldwide. The editor reports to the Chief Editor, Nature Materials, and may collaborate with other Nature Portfolio journals, with responsibilities evolving over time. Travel to conferences and research institutions is required.

What you’ll do

  • Handle original research papers and work closely with editor teams on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review
  • Make well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in light of expert advice
  • Contribute to content and strategy at Nature Materials and Nature Portfolio
  • Commission, edit content such as Reviews, Perspectives, News & Views, Comments, or write Editorials
  • Liaise extensively with editors at other Nature family journals and with experts in the international scientific community
  • Attend conferences and visit research institutions

What you’ll bring

  • PhD or equivalent qualification in materials science or a related topic
  • Thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field
  • Passion for science and breadth of interest in scientific research within and beyond specialty
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken)
  • Ability to read and assess novelty, context, and implications of research from different areas of the discipline
  • Eagerness to travel and meet scientists worldwide
  • Critical eye and deep understanding of subject with interests beyond

Nice to have

  • Additional research experience valuable but not needed
  • Editorial experience not required but encouraged; applicants with editorial experience may be considered for Senior Editor positions
