Senior Thermal and Cooling Designer BESS

About the role

BESS Product Engineering – Thermal Systems team designs and validates thermal management solutions for utility‑scale and commercial battery energy storage systems. The Senior Thermal and Cooling Designer will lead end‑to‑end thermal architecture, perform heat loss calculations, size HVAC or liquid cooling components, and validate designs through testing and CFD correlation. Based in Bengaluru, India, this role is onsite at L&T’s engineering facility, collaborating with battery, enclosure, CFD, and system teams to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency of BESS thermal systems.

What you’ll do

• Design and own thermal management architectures for battery racks, modules, and containers
• Perform heat loss calculations and define cooling strategies for utility‑scale and C&I BESS
• Size and select HVAC or liquid cooling components, including heat exchangers and pumps
• Validate thermal designs through steady‑state and transient testing, correlating CFD results
• Collaborate with CFD, mechanical, BMS, and system engineering teams
• Support FAT, SAT, and site commissioning from a thermal perspective

What you’ll bring

• 8-12 years thermal system design experience for batteries or energy storage
• Strong knowledge of heat transfer mechanisms
• Hands‑on design of air and liquid cooling systems
• Experience with thermal testing and instrumentation
• Familiarity with standards NFPA 855, UL 9540, IEC 62933
• Proficiency with CFD tools such as ANSYS/SIMcenter
