Principal Engineer – Java Backend Engineering (Payments Platform)
About the role
Principal Engineer (Java Backend Engineering) on the Global Payment Product team, helping shape the future of global commerce at a major payments company. You will own end-to-end system design and delivery for Java-based payment services, applying design patterns, model-driven solution design, and production support while mentoring and influencing stakeholders across the organization. Based in Pune, India, in a hybrid work model.
What you’ll do
- Own knowledge of end-to-end systems development life cycles, including waterfall, iterative, and other modern software development approaches.
- Apply knowledge of software industry standards such as ISO, CMM, and Six Sigma.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of payment products and services within the assigned line(s) of business.
- Apply knowledge of e-commerce and POS payment practices, regulations, and operations within the assigned line(s) of business.
- Demonstrate in-depth understanding of design patterns and their application.
- Show fluency in developing and interpreting sequence diagrams, class models, and similar artifacts.
- Leverage model-driven design tools and techniques for solution design and requirements definition, including conceptual solution component models, business process models, and use cases.
- Provide outstanding verbal and written communication for technical and non-technical audiences at all organizational levels, and fulfill the role of teacher, mentor, and coach.
What you’ll bring
- Minimum 10 years of experience developing Java applications or services.
- Knowledge and hands-on experience with Java (preferably Java 17 and above), Spring, Spring MVC, Spring Boot, and RESTful Web services.
- Experience with SQL databases such as Postgres DB or MySQL, and NoSQL databases such as Cassandra or DynamoDB.
- Experience with message streaming frameworks like Apache Kafka or ActiveMQ.
- Knowledge and experience designing, developing, and maintaining microservices using the latest technologies.
- Experience developing, maintaining, and supporting services live in production.
- Experience using CI/CD environments for deployments.
- Experience with quality assurance tools such as SonarQube, BlackDuck, Checkmarx, or Snyk.
