Mainframe Modernization Architect

About the role

Technology Department at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) drives large‑scale legacy modernization and cloud transformation for enterprise clients. The Mainframe Modernization Architect leads assessments of mainframe applications and databases, defines rehost/re‑platform/refactor strategies, and architects migration paths to modern platforms such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, and SQL Server. Chennai office, on‑site role, with occasional travel to client sites as needed.

What you’ll do

• Assess legacy mainframe applications and define modernization strategies
• Design and architect migration solutions including rehost, re‑platform, refactor, re‑architect, or replace approaches
• Lead implementation of CI/CD pipelines and automation for modernization programs
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure scalability, performance, and security of modernized solutions
• Document architecture decisions and provide guidance to development teams

What you’ll bring

• 10-15 years of mainframe experience
• Expertise in COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, IMS
• Hands‑on migration of legacy databases to PostgreSQL, Oracle, or SQL Server
• Experience with cloud platforms and AWS Solutions Architect certification preferred
• Knowledge of REXX, SAS on z/OS, and modernization frameworks
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• Domain experience in Healthcare, Insurance, or BFSI
