About the role
Applied Materials seeks a Principal Architect – Middleware & Cloud Technologies to lead the design, development, and modernization of enterprise middleware and API platforms. The role demands deep expertise in Python microservices (FastAPI), REST, gRPC, GraphQL, and SQL performance tuning across Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle. The architect will drive cloud-native, API‑driven transformations, partner with Kubernetes/OpenShift and CI/CD teams, and leverage GenAI tools (Copilot, Claude, Codex, Databricks AI) to accelerate code quality and productivity. Responsibilities include owning production code, mentoring engineers, resolving complex production issues, and acting as a technical liaison to align architecture with stakeholder needs. Candidates must have 15+ years of software engineering experience, proven team leadership, and strong communication skills.
What you’ll do
- Own, design, build middleware and API platforms
- Develop Python microservices (FastAPI) and modern APIs
- Lead enterprise modernization to cloud-native, API-driven architectures
- Drive GenAI-assisted development for code generation, refactoring, SQL optimization
- Partner with cloud/infrastructure teams on Kubernetes/OpenShift, CI/CD, scalability, observability, performance
- Resolve complex production issues across performance, data, integration layers
- Mentor engineers through coding, pairing, design, code reviews
- Act as technical liaison aligning architecture with stakeholder needs
