Data Scientist

About the role

Caterpillar Inc. seeks a Data Scientist to contribute to design, solution development, and strategy within its Technology, Digital and Data career area. The role involves independent work on complex systems and infrastructure, driving application development, mentoring peers, and maintaining software quality standards. Based in Chennai or Bangalore, this full-time position requires five days per week on-site work with relocation assistance available.

What you’ll do

• Contribute to the design, solution development, and strategy for data science initiatives
• Perform programming, project management, and development assignments independently on complex systems work
• Identify and resolve complex application/technical problems, including responding to off-shift and weekend support calls
• Work independently on complex systems or infrastructure components used by multiple applications or systems
• Drive application development focused on delivering business-valuable features
• Mentor and assist data scientists by providing technical assistance and direction
• Maintain high software quality standards by establishing good practices and habits within the team
• Guide the team in developing structured application/interface code, program documentation, operations documentation, and user guides

What you’ll bring

• BS or MS degree in a quantitative discipline such as data science, data analytics, computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics, finance, or related field
• Overall professional experience of 5+ years
• 3+ years of proven experience as a Data Scientist designing and implementing data processing and machine learning frameworks
• Recent 3+ years of experience with Python and SQL
• Hands-on experience with Agents, Large Language Models, Small Language Models, Retrieval Augmented Generation, Generative AI, Natural Language Processing, and Deep Learning
• Ability to perform programming, project management, and development assignments without close supervision
• Capability to work directly on complex application/technical problem identification and resolution
• Willingness to respond to off-shift and weekend support calls
